NATIONAL STATISTICS DAY





Every year 29th June is celebrated as the National Statistics day . National Statistics Day was celebrated first time in the year 2007.The June 29th June was chosen to acknowledge the outstanding contribution made by prof. Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis in the field of economics planning and statistics . 29th June is the birth anniversary of Prof Prasant Chandra Mahalanobis.

Prasant Chandra Mahalanobis (29 June 1893- 28 June 1972) was an Indian Scientist and statistician .He was the Recipient of Padma Vibhushan in 1968. He served as the chairman of the United Nations Sub Commission on statistical Sampling from 1947 to 1951. In 1931, prof PC Mahalanobis founded the ISI ( Indian Statistical Institute).




The theme of National Statistics Day (2020) is SDG- 3 (Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages) & SDG- 5 (Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.

The aim of National Statistics Day- is to create public awareness among people about importance of statistics in daily life and in process of planning and development.
