The Sangeet Natak Akademi currently confers classical status on eight Indian Classical dance styles:          Bharatanatyam(TamilNadu), Kathak ( North India), Kuchipudi (AndhraPradesh) , Odissi(Odisha),  Kathakali (Kerala), Sattriya(Assam), Manipuri (Manipur) and Mohiniyattam(Kerala).

BHARATANATYAM:

Bharatanatyam is a dance of Tamil Nadu in southern India. It was earlier known as Daasiyattam. This dance form has been handed down through the centuries by dance teachers(or Gurus) called nattuwanars and the temple dancers called devadasis. Originally a temple dance for women , bharatanatyam often is employed to precise Hindu religious stories and devotions. It was not commonly seen on the general public stage until the 20th century. The dance movements are characterized by bent legs, while feet keep rhythm. Hands could also be utilized in a series of mudras, or symbolic hand gestures, to inform a story
